About ElectroDermal Screening

Overview to ElectroDermal screening (EDS).
According to Oriental medicine there are a number of distinct energy channels known as meridians that flow through the body. These meridians carry information related to body organs such as lung, large intestine, liver etc. They flow from the hands to the head, down the body and to the feet. In EDS screening we use acupuncture points on the meridians to assess the energetic health of organs & body system.
Acupuncture meridians in the body and on the hand. Red dots indicate acupuncture points
To do this a probe connected to an EDS test meter is used. The probe has a brass tip which is gently applied to an acupuncture points to take an electrical reading.
EDS Probe
In this example the probe is being applied to a point on the circulation Meridian and the meter is displaying the reading. If the reading is in the green this indicates the circulatory system is balance, a reading in the yellow would indicate a chronic imbalance and the reading in the red (as in this example) indicates an acute imbalance condition.
Taking an E. D. S. reading
When an organ's meridian is found to be out of balance ie not in the green, then an appropriate remedy to rebalance the organ can be found by using test ampoules containing samples of remedies.
Ampoules containing test substance
Here a remedy ampoule has been placed in the honeycomb tray which is connected between the meter and probe. The acupuncture point reading is retaken and the metre now registers green which indicates that the remedy will help rebalance the organ. If it had stayed in the red then the remedy would not have been appropriate. In this way a whole series of remedies can be quickly tested. Extending this method also allows for the determination of causative factors such as viruses, fungus, heavy metals etc. also nutritional deficiencies, food sensitivities, hormone balance, environmental sensitivities etc. can be determined.

History of EDS
The father of ElectroDermal Screening (EDS) or otherwise known as Electro Acupuncture according to Voll (EAV) was Dr Reinhold Voll, a German biophysicist working in the 1950s on ways to integrate western and Oriental medicine. Dr Voll found that the electrical characteristics of acupuncture points vary as a substance a person was sensitive to, depleted in or would benefit from was placed near them. This basically gave him a way of asking the body questions such as "do you have a sensitivity to bananas" by placing a banana near the person and measuring the reaction of an acupuncture point. This type of reaction is known as biofeedback. Dr Voll also found a correlation between acupuncture points and the functional health of internal organs. He mapped out over 1000 points and a corresponding indication. These partially agreed with the Chinese acupuncture doctrine but not entirely. What you have to remember is that he was assessing what was happening energetically in a person through acupuncture points as opposed to treating them through the points in the traditional way. Dr Voll's original device was known as the Diatherapuncteur and this was superseded by the Dermatron in the 1960s of which there are a number still in use. The Dermatron also combined a treatment device using electrical oscillations of 10 - 13 hertz to stimulate acupuncture points.

Dr Voll discovered the remedy test by accident. During a presentation Dr Voll who regularly tested himself using Electro Dermal Screening found he was unable to find 'sick' acupuncture points which he was aware should have been there. Suddenly he remembered, that he still had his remedies in his pocket. After removing these remedies from his person, the pathological values were again measurable. This method is now used to test individual patients for the necessary required remedies to compensate any irregularities.

During the late 1960s a group of Voll practitioners developed a simplified testing system called Bio-electronic Functioning Determination (BFD). The original Voll protocol was very time-consuming involving measuring a great number of points, this new system measured far fewer points, mostly just at the ends of the fingers and was far simpler and quicker yet gave very good results.

Dr Schimmel, who at this time was working in his practice with the BFD method refined this still further and in 1978 developed the single point testing protocol were all tests could be carried out using a single acupuncture point. This method in conjunction with modifications to the test equipment resulted in the Vega Test. Dr Schimmel went on to develop a filtering process that allowed detailed and rapid assessment of his clients just using this single point protocol. Dr Schimmel, after a long and distinguished career died in 2003.

Equipment available
Over the years many EDS devices have been developed around the world particularly in Germany, Russia and America. The Fundamental principle of operation remains the same and simply involves measuring the electrical conductance of acupuncture points. The original method of using test ampoules is now being replaced by the latest generation of computerised instruments known as Computerised ElectroDermal Screening (CEDS) where the signature information of test substances has been digitally recorded on a computer and played back to simulate their presence.
